I have a bunch of Brit friends here in Moscow. Really love to get together and drink and BS with them. Despite the language barrier, and their weird obsession with the letter 'u' in every otherwise-nourmal wourd, I have a great time hanging out with them.
So when I told them I had picked my first 10K, the Dart 10K specifically, they were excited. "Darmouth?!" they asked. "Yes, I think so," I answered. "Holy crap," they shouted. (Well, actually they said "Bloody hell" or some such foreign phrase...I helpfully translated it for you dear reader(s).)
They told me all about their Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, and how I need to go see it, and all the wonderful sights in and around Dartmouth. One of my Brit friends rowed on the very river that I'll be swimming in. I asked if their military bases had visiting officer quarters and, if so, would they take money from a Yank that's just looking for a cheap place to crash.
A week later, I got an email telling me that not only did I have a place to stay in Dartmouth for the four days I'll be there, but that there's an American Navy liaison officer there who will be my interpreter...I mean...point of contact while in town. Bloody brilliant!
Love the Brits...
