I leave tomorrow for the 3.5 hour flight down to Cyprus. The Cyprus Swimming Federation will have a taxi at the airport for me and other swimmers arriving at the same time. We arrive in Larnaca, and the swim is southwest in Limassol, something like 45 KM away. (No, I will not swim that distance.)
I still have no idea where I'll be staying, but I know it will cost 85 euros a night. The hotel should be 5-10 minutes walk from the Famagusta Aquatic Club. Right out of the taxi I have to go to a technical meeting, where I'll pay for my hotel, and hopefull get answers to my questions that have gone partially unanswered by the Cyprus Swimming folks. Like: water temperature? bag drop?
I did find out that the 5K and 10K are now both on Saturday. Originally the 10K was to be on Sunday, but they'll hold them both on Saturday with a common start! Ah, there's another question: in-water or beach-run start?
Looks like we'll have to keep the buoys to our right, which is great for me, a right-sided breather. (I really must work more on bilateral breathing.) Looking at this google earth image, I wonder if those long thin rectangular things a bit offshore are breakers? Dare I hope for calm water?
The best part is having Sunday off! I may hop in the water for a cool down, especially if the buoys are still up. But I'm looking forward to seeing some Cyprus sites, and drinking some Cypriot beer. There is a medieval museum in Limassol which sounds nice, and that is my favorite historical time period. Ancient Amathus deserves a look. Who knows? I'll probably just check out the local area and whatever I can walk to. Oh, and take lots of pictures. Wish I had one of those awesome waterproof cameras.
Good luck!
