I've received permission from the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) to officially announce that I am swimming in support of their cause. As my swim gets closer (I'm not swimming it until summer 2013), the SOWF will forward me promotional items, which I'll plaster all over work.
The SOWF are devoted to providing a college education to every child who has lost a parent serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps during an operational or training mission under the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). The SOWF is currently committed to providing scholarship grants to more than 900 children of the approximately 800 Special Operations personnel who have given their lives for their country since 1980, including those who died fighting our nation's war against terrorism as part of "Operation Enduring Freedom" in Afghanistan and the Philippines as well as "Operation Iraqi Freedom." As of today, 190 children of fallen special operations warriors have graduated from college.
As if that wasn't enough, they also help Special Operations Forces (SOF) soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who are seriously wounded in the line of duty. Once notified, SOWF will give $3000 so that the family of the injured SOF member can travel to be at their side.
Some may wonder why I picked a seemingly obscure charity to swim for. The foundation is a very specific one. I've been lucky in my military career to work with some incredibly dedicated and loyal Americans. For a little while, I worked in a unit that was aligned with USSOCOM. Two members of my unit, Shane Kimmett and Glenn Lastes, died while serving our country. I'll be swimming for them. Please click on their names to keep their memories alive.
