Last weekend I took part in my first official masters meet. The meet, Tropical Splash, is put on every year by my team, Alexandria Masters. The longest available event was the 500 free (SCY). No 1000 or 1650 unfortunately.
The 500 was the first event, and since I had no time, I was in the first group to go. Next to me was David Robinson. We had some fun with that one. He looked about as much like the basketball player as I look like the boxer whose name I share. I was the only swimmer to have NT for the 500. I was the second youngest. The youngster in the heat was in his mid-30s, then me at 45, then everyone else was in their late 50's to early 70's.
I exploded off the blocks and kept my goggles on. My #1 goal. My first 150 yards was way too fast, so I cycled back a bit for the next 150. Still was tough, but I thought that would help me save some for the finish. At 300 I realized I only had 200 more so I pushed it hard. I tried to keep my form nice, but by the last 50 I was just swimming as fast as I could to hell with my form. I came in at 7:10.33.
Under my goal! My goal was to keep my hundreds at 1:30, thus 7:30. This time means 1:26 per 100, something I'm happy with. Next meet (whenever that is) I'll try for 1:25/100.
I continued the meet taking part in a 200 free relay and 200 medley relay (breast). I was on the 45+ team; I was the spring chicken by 9 years in the free relay and by 15 in the medley relay. I think we did really well. Our 200 free was 1:57.86 and our medley was 2:32.82.
