There is little difference between the religious leaders who blame natural disasters on our sinfully debauched ways and the agnostic ideologues who blame them on our sinfully wasteful ways. It's just a difference of one being socially trendy. Both derive from an excess of hubris.
I was listening to some guy on C-Span radio this morning advocating for a carbon tax system. He started out fairly reasonable -- for a fear monger -- but soon moved from arguing for a small tax on carbon emitting activities to turning homes in the suburbs into dormatories for his army of dead-eyed environmental warriors dedicated to eradicating all joy in the world except for the joy of righteous self-abnegation.
By the end of the interview he had completely reshaped our world into his particular narrow and remorseless idea of utopia. Exciting in a comic book super villian. Scary when it's someone with access to our national leaders.
